Chapter 2 – Reincarnation

It was warm. Kenichi realized that he had lost consciousness. He found himself in a warm bath, or maybe it was warmer than that.

(Eh? I can’t breath?)

Kenichi realized that he was in some mysterious liquid. He was confused. His strength seemed to have left him, and he couldn’t move his body.

(Dangit, am I dead? How am I still okay without breathing? What’s going on?)

He’s immersed in warm liquid, he can’t breath, and he can’t see anything, but he still seemed fine. And there was this incredible sense of tranquility.

Kenichi was an ordinary office worker, so he had experienced all the trials and tribulations of the real world, but all his weariness was melting away.

He felt indifferent, and simply waited for time to pass.

10 days passed.

Kenichi was suddenly filled with a sense of unease. He didn’t know why, but he was anxious.

(Oh? Maybe? Is this? Urgh, something’s happening.)

Starting from the top of his head, he felt a strong pressure over his entire body.

He was still immobile, blind, and deaf, but he was conscious.

Just as he noticed the full-body pressure subsiding, he felt himself being submerged in the warmth again.

(M-my breath is- blublubblub)

Until now, he was fine even though he couldn’t breathe. But now, he suddenly wanted oxygen. As he was struggling to breathe, he felt an impact on his butt. He felt the impact over and over again. Apparently, something was hitting his butt.

(Buh! It hurts!! What’re you doing!!!)

“Waahhh!!!! Waaahhhhhhh!!!!!!”

“Oi, he’s breathing! You did it, Theresia!!”

“Thanks, dear….”

For the first time in a while, Kenichi heard a voice. It sounded like Japanese, but he could barely see or hear a thing. He could breath again, and although he didn’t know if the air was safe, he inhaled greedily.

There seemed to be a few people around him. He couldn’t even tell exactly how many people there were.

He was taken out of the warm liquid and wrapped in some uncomfortable cloth. After a while, he regained his composure.

(Without a doubt, I’ve been reincarnated. That’s great and all, but why did I get reincarnated before birth? At least let me start at 5 years old or something!)

Since then, 6 months had passed. Kenichi spent his days observing his surroundings. His eyes and ears have developed, and he could see and hear more.

Now that he could crawl, he had a means of transportation, albeit limited.

“Allen, are you sleeping?”

“Da.”

He has learned a lot in the past 6 months. Kenichi Yamada was now named Allen.

Although there wasn’t a setting for sex, it wasn’t an issue because he was born as a male.

The woman holding him was his mother, Theresia. She didn’t look over 20, maybe more like she was in her late teens. She was a beautiful woman with green eyes, and long brown hair tied back with a string.

She placed him gently in a small, simple, wooden crib. She covered him up to his shoulders with a soft hemp quilt.

“Theresia, I’m home.”

It was past noon now. A solidly built man came in through the entryway. He was sweaty and covered in dirt.

The man’s name was Rodan, and he was Allen’s father. He had brown hair like Theresia, and gave off a rugged vibe. He’s large and muscular, and looked around 20 years old.

Theresia usually called the man “Honey”, so it was hard for Allen to figure out his dad’s name.

Theresia handed Rodan two fluffy potatoes.

“Hmm? Have you eaten yet, Theresia?”

“Eh?”

Theresia choked a bit. Rodan gave one of the potatoes back to Theresia. This was a common exchange between the two of them.

“We can’t have that. If you don’t eat well, you won’t make enough milk. The village tax is only reduced until next year, so we have to make sure our kid grows big and strong by then.”

“Thank you, Honey.”

(Does this village not have a name?)

The village seems to be a new development by the regional lord. It seemed that they gathered a lot of young people. Allen often heard about new children being born in the village, like in his parents’ current conversation, where they said a neighbor recently had a child.

(It seems that I’m still an only child.)

Their house only had the parents, Rodan and Theresia, and the child, Kenichi.

Because the town was new, it had a tax subsidy. That was probably why Theresia and Rodan came to the village without their parents.

Rodan munched on the potatoes and drank water from the water jar using a wooden cup, then headed out. On his way out, he often kissed Theresia on the cheek. They were still so lovey-dovey. A little sibling might be on the way soon.

(Being a serf isn’t exactly easy, but it’s not a bad life.)

Back in the real world, Allen had chosen to be a serf, so he wasn’t unhappy with his situation. He had a beautiful mother, and a family-oriented father. But he had one complaint.

(Status open.)

He put his hand in the air and called out mentally, with all his will.

But nothing happened. He lowered his hand.

(I’m a Summoner, right? Am I too young to summon? I can’t even check my status. This really is Hell Mode. But I guess there’s nothing I can do.)

Allen is a 6-month-old infant. Nothing more, nothing less. He was supposed to be born as a summoner, but he hasn’t been able to anything like that yet.

(Usually, in this type of story, the protagonist is reincarnated as a baby and notices his magic power at a young age, and by the time they’re a toddler, they’re super overpowered.)

Without finding any answers, he was overtaken by drowsiness. Since his body was that of a baby, when he was hungry, he cried, when he needed to pee, he wet himself, and when he was tired, he fell asleep.

Another six months pass. It had been one year since the reincarnation.

It was the beginning of autumn now, so Allen was probably born in autumn.

In front of him were a bunch of foods much fancier than the usual spread. Since Allen was still weaning, he usually ate boiled beans or steamed potatoes that were mashed with a mortar and pestle.

“This is all thanks to you, Honey. Because you defeated that Great Boar, the food today is so fancy.”

“Mm. Today, I worked hard for Allen!”

“Thank you Papa, Mama.”

Allen’s parents were both farmers. Next to the house, there was a field, where it seemed they only grew wheat and potatoes. Allen still had to be carried around by Theresia. Therefore, he had only been far as the yard, and that was just a guess based on what he’d heard.

Throughout the past year, or rather, as far back as he could remember, based on his consciousness clearing up nine months ago, the family had been focusing entirely on farming.

Apparently, after the fall harvest, the men of the village got together and went hunting in the nearby woods. It seemed that his muscular father really enjoyed it.

His dad had said many times that, if he wasn’t born a serf, he would be a hunter. It seemed like part of the meat from the hunt was given to those who participated, and apparently, he was a big part of the hunt.

(It’s all about the ingredients, isn’t it?)

Allen happily ate his food, which was made of fresh ingredients with almost no salt. Was there fruit in it too? The roughly mashed apple-like nuts were certainly delicious.

After the meal, Allen was put to bed, and began to think.

(This isn’t too bad. One of these days I’ll become a Summoner.)

With that in mind, he rose one of his hands, and thought the words that he had tried dozens of times before.

(Status open.)

Bing!

Suddenly, a jet-black book appeared in front of his eyes. It was floating mid-air, a short distance from his hand.
