Chapter 5 – Investigation

Ten days have passed since the first summoning.

It was past noon, near the end of nap time. Allen is thinking about the future while staring at the cover of the grimoire, which displayed his status.

After 10 days of summoning while avoiding Theresia’s watchful eye, he had learned quite a bit.

First, the grimoire.

・If he thought about the grimoire, it would appear.

・If he thought “status”, his status would appear in silver letters on the cover.

・If he thought “create”, the prompt for what to create would appear in silver letters on the cover.

These were the functions of the grimoire. Since that one time, he hadn’t heard anything from the God of the Other World.

Next, the created cards.

・He could have up to 10 cards.

・Up to 10 creatures could be summoned at once.

・He got buffs per card, and the buffs stack.

・He could freely change a summon between its summoned form and its card form.

Apparently, the grimoire had a limited capacity. He could only have a combined stock of 10 cards and active summons. When he tried to create an 11th card, the grimoire’s cover said that he needed to delete a card first. It was the same even if he had one of his cards summoned.

In the past 10 days, he also tried summoning BEAST H.

【 TYP 】 BEAST
【 RNK 】 H
【 NAM 】 Chorosuke1
【 H P 】 5
【 M P 】 0
【 ATK 】 5
【 DEF 】 2
【 AGL 】 3
【 INT 】 1
【 LCK 】 2
【 BUF 】 HP 1, ATK 1
【 SKL 】 Scamper

Beast H Investigation Results

・Beast H was in the form of a mouse that is relatively large

・Like the grasshopper, it didn’t listen to instructions.

・If he said or thought its skill, the summon would use it.

In its status, the 【NAM】 row says 『Chorosuke』, because Allen had set its name. He could Create and Summon it using its nickname instead of calling it Beast H. While it was true that abbreviations were convenient for his investigations and analysis, he still liked to name them.

And it wasn’t necessary to say anything out loud, just thinking it was enough.

He had named the grasshopper “Denka”.

As of now, they didn’t seem to listen to him at all, like they were completely unintelligent. He thought it would be possible to train them, but there were no signs of change.

They lacked the intelligence to understand him, but there was one thing he could tell them to do.

Each summoned creature had a skill. For example, with Beast H, if he said or thought “scamper” or “use your skill”, the creature would do it. It didn’t seem to consume any MP, because the summon could do it over and over again.

Even now, he was looking straight at the mouse-like Beast H, desperately trying to mentally communicate with it.

Allen held his breath, silently continuing his investigation. Incidentally, Theresia had turned the grasshopper into light 3 times in the past 10 days. The house wasn’t much more than a shack, with no insulation or soundproofing. There were a lot of holes for bugs to enter through. The grasshopper summon probably made her uncomfortable because it was bigger than normal grasshoppers.

It had been 10 days of careful investigation, all while enduring drowsiness and hunger, and keeping a watchful eye out for Theresia.

(Chorosuke, I know you can do it. Come here.)

From a corner of the room, he held his hands out in a gesture that said “Come here”. Perhaps it had heard him, because it made eye contact with him for a moment.

“Oh!”

He couldn’t help but exclaim.

He was happy that he finally succeeded in commanding a summon. However, the summon looked away, and started wandering around aimlessly.

(N-no way… How is this the class that transcends Demon King?)

Well, the summons were somewhat useful.

(These summons are useless in a battle, but stocking 10 mice will increase my attack by 10. Even though I’m only one year old, I can carry around all of the wood I found in the house.)

Thanks to the power of the summoner class, he gained strength beyond that of a normal one-year-old.

Also, by repeatedly creating and summoning, he came to understand how to grow as a Summoner.

(But, as I expected, it’s hard to level up in Hell Mode.)

Hell Mode made it 100 times harder to level up compared to Normal Mode. It was a mode where, once mastered, one could obtain a truth about the world. But it required extraordinary and tireless effort to grow.

【 NAM 】 ALLEN
【 AGE 】 1
【 CLS 】Summoner
【 LVL 】 1
【 H P 】 4 (40) + 8
【 M P 】 0 (20)
【 ATK 】 1 (10) + 8
【 DEF 】 1 (10) + 2
【 AGL 】 2 (25) + 2
【 INT 】 3 (30)
【 LCK 】 2 (25)
【 SKL 】 Summon <1>, Create <1>, Delete
【 EXP 】 0 / 1,000

・Skill LVL
 【SUMMN】 1
 【CREAT】 1
・Skill EXP
 【CREAT】 24 / 1,000
・Obtainable Summons
 【 BUG 】 H
 【BEAST】 H
・Holder
 【BUG】 H 2 cards
 【BEAST】 H 8 cards

(The skill EXP is only at 24, huh? So any MP I use becomes EXP. Well, that’s just a hypothesis, because all of my skills cost exactly 2 MP.)

Investigation Results on MP and EXP Gain

・Creating a rank H summon consumes 2 MP

・Consumed MP is added to the skill’s skill EXP

・Turning a created card into a summon doesn’t require MP

・Turning an active summon into a card doesn’t require MP

・MP fully recovers after around half a night of sleep.

It turns out that the best way to level up the Create skill was to create a lot.

(That said, it takes 2 MP, and my max MP is 2. If I make 1 card a day, it’ll take 500 cards to get Create to level 2. Apparently, it takes 6 hours of sleep to refill my MP, so I can aim to create two cards a day. That’ll still take 250 days though.)

He began to understand the endless nature of Hell Mode.

MP was fully recovered after around half a night of sleep, so he assumed it took around 6 hours to fill up.

He was a baby who needed 12-15 hours of sleep a day and didn’t have an alarm clock, so even if he could fully recover his MP 4 times a day, it was difficult to wake up regularly these past 10 days.

Sometimes he created 3 cards a day, and sometimes he only created one. But from now on, he would try to Create at least twice a day.

(I want a notes function. The grimoire has so many extra pages, so let me use them.)

He wanted to write down all his thoughts from the past 10 days.

It was only natural for gamers to use spreadsheets to analyze their stats and levels. He wasn’t asking for something that extravagant, he just wanted a way to record his findings.

He kept thinking to himself that he wanted to use the blank pages, in the hope that his thoughts would be sent to the God of the Other World.

While grumbling about the grimoire, he heard Rodan’s voice coming from the main room.

“Theresia, I’m home~!!”

(Oh! He’s back. Based on his tone, it sounds like it was a good hunt!)

Rodan’s voice was bright and full of joy. Allen was excited that Rodan had returned.
