Chapter 8 – G Rank

It had been 3 years since Kenichi Yamada reincarnated as Allen in another world.

Because Allen was 3 years old now, Theresia was finally letting him leave the house by himself. Allen’s birthday seemed to be on the 1st day of the 10th month in this world’s calendar. That was also the date of the village’s harvest festival. As usual, this year’s meal was fancy. It wasn’t until he was 3 that he learned that it was also for the harvest festival . He felt like someone who had their birthday on Christmas.

The harvest festival wasn’t like Obon, where there would be a dance in the middle of the village, but more like a ceremony where the mayor went to the church and dedicated the harvest to the god of fertility.

Serfs didn’t go to such ceremonies. By the way, Allen remembered that Rodan was out hunting during his first birthday.

In the past 3 years, he had learned a lot about serfdom. 60% of the harvest was paid as tax to the mayor, who represented the local lord. When the area was first settled, there were tax subsidies. But that was before, and now they collected the full tax. The tax was percentage-based, so the more crops produced, the more crops would be left over.

Theresia told Allen that if the harvest was too scarce, or if you cheated on your taxes, you could be sentenced to slavery, which was worse than being a serf.

Also, they didn’t eat all of the 40% of the crops and meat. Some was exchanged for salt, which was essential for survival, and some was traded for rags to be used as Allen’s diapers.

Furthermore, this world also had 4 seasons. Although the village wasn’t in an area with heavy snowfall, in the winter, the world became completely white. You needed firewood to fend off the cold.

Of the meat rewarded from a hunt, which could be up to 20 lbs, about half was traded for firewood.

The frontier village was mostly serfs, so there was a lot of bartering. However, even a serf could have money, although usually very little. Allen had a high fever around February this year. He remembered the image of Rodan ripping up the floorboards of the nursery, grabbing some coins, and heading out. When he came back, he gave Allen some medicine that was probably a fever reducer.

He had taken almost all the money with him, and now, under the floorboards, there were only a few copper and iron coins. There were also about 5 pebble-like magic stones from horned rabbits. That was the first time Allen had seen money or magic stones in this world.

And then, one day, some time after he turned 3…

Allen was leaning against a tree in the yard. It wasn’t a big tree but it was a decent size. The yard had a fence, but people could easily see through it. He used the tree as a wall for when he investigated his summons.

(Done. I’ve pretty much figured out Synthesize level 2 and Create Level 2.)

It wasn’t until 1 year and 10 months old that Allen learned Synthesize level 1 and Create level 2.

The investigation took so long to complete because his max MP wasn’t high enough. Apparently, on his birthday on October 1st, Allen’s stats increased by 10%. Now that he was 3, his max MP was 6, and he could finally finish his investigation.

Then, he completed the analysis of the G-rank summons by getting Synthesize to level 2.

First, the investigation results.

 Create Level 2
 ・Consumes 5 MP

 Synthesize Level 2
 ・Consumes 5 MP
 ・Combining BUG G and BEAST G creates BIRD G

He noted the investigation results using the note-taking function of the grimoire, and he had an approximate understanding of everything.

He placed the summoned Bird G on his shoulder and checked his status.

【 NAM 】 Allen

 【 BRD 】 G 2 cards

(This’ll do for now. I’ve confirmed that the skill EXP gained equals the MP used.)

He checked his remaining MP.

(If the skill EXP gained is the same as the MP spent, I shouldn’t be using Create 2 or Synthesize to grind. It’d be more efficient to use Create 1 to get to Create level 3. I don’t wanna waste any MP.)

Allen’s max MP was 6, and Create level 1 used 2 MP, while Create level 2 and Synthesize level 1 used 5 MP. To efficiently convert his MP to EXP, he should use Create level 1.

(So that’s what I’ll do. Sounds good. Next is…)

“Hey, Allen.”

Allen talks to the Bird G summon on his shoulder while thinking about using its special skill.

“Yup, I’m Allen.”

Bird G replied in Allen’s voice.

(Wow, the summons have become much more useful now they’re G rank.)

These are the statuses of the three newly available summons.

・Status of Bug G, a frog
 【 TYP 】 BUG

 【 M P 】 0
 【 ATK 】 10

 【 LCK 】 8
 【 BUF 】 AGL 2, INT 2
 【 SKL 】 Mimic

As per usual, the stats were pretty low, and just like the H-rank summons, they didn’t listen to a word Allen said. But Allen was focused on the skills.

Bird G’s skill could reproduce Allen’s voice. In the real world, parrots could copy human voices, but it was nothing like this. It was a perfect imitation. But it couldn’t learn long phrases or multiple voices.

Next was Beast G, which was peeking out of a hole in front of him. It was a mole about the size of a small dog that could easily dig a 1-foot-wide, 3-foot-deep hole.

(Isn’t this an easy way to make a pitfall?)

Summons didn’t need MP, and Allen could tell them to use their skills an infinite number of times. Although he couldn’t get it to do anything else, he could make it dig a hole whenever he wanted.

Finally, there was BUG G, which was next to Allen. It was pretty big, about the size of a bullfrog.

(Taunt.)

“Croak, croak, croak”

When instructed, the frog changed its color from solid green to a red and yellow pattern. It started croaking while jumping around erratically.

While examining the Summoner class at G rank, Allen thought to himself. Apparently, summoners weren’t just about strong summons.

For example, the frog-like Bug G was able to use taunt to draw the aggro of a monster. If the Beast G mole worked hard, it could dig a big pitfall trap. He now understood that it was important to have a good understanding of the Summoner class’ unique characteristics.

Dong

Dong

Dong

(Hm? It’s about time.)

A bell rang in the distance. It was 3 o’clock in the frontier village.

Allen grabbed his wooden sword off the ground.

1: Pyonta – comes from the japanese onomatopoeia pyon, which is a hopping noise usually associated with frogs and bunnies. -ta is a common male name ending (like in Kenta, Shota, Gobuta) that literally translates to mean “great”.

2: Mogusuke -comes from the japanese for mole (mogura) and -suke is a common male name ending (Sasuke, Josuke)

3: Chappy – a generic name in Japan for parakeets/parrots. Kinda like Polly in english.

Thanks for reading! 🙂
