Chapter 11 – Little Brother

The months passed, and Allen turned 4. It was early spring, March. The snow had begun to melt, and the fields were sprouting with green. Allen was alone in the yard, standing in front of a tree.

It had been around a year and half since he started throwing stones at the tree. On the cover of the grimoire was a message in yellow.

Throwing is now level 3.』

(So I finally got it to level 3.)

Allen had successfully acquired the Throwing skill, and managed to raise it to level 3.

Looking at his notes in the grimoire, he checked how many stones he had thrown.

(So in the end, there are certain rules for acquiring skills. So it’s 10,000…)

 Stones thrown (cumulative)

 ・10,000 - Throwing level 1

 ・20,000 - Throwing level 2

 ・120,000 - Throwing level 3

(This might only be for the Throwing skill, but it seems these are the requirements to acquire and level a skill.)

・To acquire a skill, you must repeat an action a certain number of times.

・Repeat it the same number of times to get from level 1 to level 2.

・Getting to level 3 requires 10 times this amount.

The tree had endured 120,000 hits, and its bark had peeled off in a circle. At first, Allen only threw 100 a day, but when he got to level 2, he realized that the number of throws mattered. From then on, he threw 300 times a day.

(If this was Normal Mode, would it only take 100 throws?)

Hell Mode required 100 times more EXP than Normal Mode. He guessed that EXP came from how many times you repeat something.

(Well, what about Throwing level 4? If I need to throw 1 million stones, even if I throw 300 a day, it’ll take me over 9 years. Well, I guess I don’t have anything better to do. I’ll just keep throwing until I figure something else out. If I throw another 100 or 200 thousand, and the skill doesn’t level, then I’ll just assume it’s 1 million.)

While thinking about the future, he checked his status page.

Summon had reached level 2 when he was a year and 10 months old, but now he was 4 years and 5 months, and it was still at level 2.

When he was 3, he had leveled Create to level 3, and Synthesize to level 2.

(Even though Create is level 3 now, Summon didn’t level up to 3.)

Whenever he checked his status in the grimoire, he always thought, “Man, the number of obtainable summons is still the same. Probably because I haven’t reached Summon level 3 yet.” When he reached Summon level 2, he unlocked Bird G. So, to summon higher ranks, he’d probably need to raise the level of his Summon skill.

(I don’t know how to do that though.)

He was reincarnated without a walkthrough or a strategy guide. The only option was to figure everything out on his own, through trial and error. Even if Create was level 3, Summon stayed at level 2. He was worried about leveling Summon, and thought to get Synthesize to level 3 first. For now, he guessed that, if he leveled all his skill, then Summon would also level up.

Also, even though he leveled it up, Synthesize still only cost 5 MP. Synthesize probably had a fixed MP cost, unlike Create.

As for the Swordsmanship skill, Kurena came to play knights almost everyday, so it went up naturally. After a year and half of this, his Swordsmanship skill was level 2. But his Throwing skill was higher because of the increased repetitions.

When he had a skill, he noticed a difference in almost every aspect, including power. With both Throwing and Swordsmanship, his body’s movements were corrected so that his posture became more natural and correct. And, he felt that his throws and sword swings were more powerful.

 Skill Leveling Investigation Results

 ・Corrects the body's movements

・The higher the skill level, the more powerful it becomes.

This was a fantasy world of swords and magic, but it wasn’t a game, it was a whole other world. Although he could feel the increase in power, there weren’t any damage numbers or anything like that.

“Allen, come help out with lunch~”

It was almost noon. Theresia called out to Allen, who was in the yard, and he headed back inside to help his mother.

“Okay, Mama”

He took his place next to her, and started helping. Theresia was carrying a toddler on her back.

In December, two years ago, Theresia had safely given birth to her second child, a boy. The toddler on her back was a year and a half old. He was already awake and flapping his legs.

Bouncing the baby on her back, Theresia handed Allen a steamed potato and a pestle.

“Mash, we’ll be eating soon.”

“Da~aa”

Allen’s younger brother, Mash, replied by stretching his body out while drooling. He had brown hair, green eyes, and he looked more like his father.

Rodan had named him after a monster from this world. According to Rodan, there is a wolf-like monster called the Murdergarche, a lone wolf that roamed around the world on whim. From the name, it was obvious that Rodan had a strong desire for his children to live free lives.

Like how Allen came from Albaheron, the original form of the name was pretty much lost.

The Murdergarche was a B-rank monster, which was two ranks higher than the D-rank Albaheron. And here, Allen thought that the older brother was supposed to be stronger.

(Eat, and grow big and strong, my brother.)

His younger brother had already started eating baby food. Allen mashed the potatoes well, so that his brother wouldn’t choke on them. Allen wasn’t allowed to help out on the fields yet, so he’s been helping out more at home.

“I’m home~”

Rodan came through the yard, back from the field. The family gathered around the hearth for lunch, which was rather light because they were serfs, and because it was normal in the culture of this world.

After scarfing down 2 potatoes, Rodan started on his way out.

“By the way, starting next year, the village is going to be called Deboji Village. The lord’s messenger said so.”

Rodan shared a story he heard this morning at the well, from another serf.

“Ah, the village will finally have a name.”

(As development progresses, I guess it’s not a frontier village anymore.)

It’s been 9 years since the village was founded. Now that things were getting settled, it seemed that the village would be named starting.

“Ah, yeah, it’s supposed to be named after the mayor, so that’s why it’s like that.”

(Mayor Deboji… Never seen him before.)

This reminded Allen of something he heard from Rodan before. Frontier villages were often named after the most famous person from the village’s early years. So, more often than not, that would be the first mayor.

Rodan got ready for the fields, saying that he would be back soon, and Theresia, who had nursed Mash until he was 1, helped Rodan in the fields when it was nap time.

(This is family harmony.)

Rodan kissed Theresia on the cheek, and left. Theresia didn’t say anything, but she looked happy. She looked at Mash in a way that made Allen think that a third child might be on its way. His younger brother, Mash, was making a mess, grasping a wooden spoon and struggling to eat.

Sometimes, Allen would think to himself, “Why was I reincarnated?”

He really wanted to play a game with an obsolete, old-school setting, so he didn’t regret coming to a fantasy world with swords and magic. He left the real world at age 35. His parents over there might have been a bit sad, but he wasn’t married, and never even had a girlfriend, so he thought that there probably wasn’t too much damage.

But when he first came to this world, he wanted to be reincarnated as an adult, not a baby.

He wanted to concentrate on grinding, without restraint. He wanted to go to a nearby town and become an adventurer, hunting monsters and working hard on leveling.

If you played any game, you would find Kenichi there, at the level cap, with the strongest equips in the game. He’s always liked playing games that way. He wanted to do it again in this other world.

It’s been four years since Allen arrived in this world, and he didn’t even know the name of the country he was in. It didn’t come up in his parents’ conversations, and he didn’t dare to ask. All he knew was that it was some sort of kingdom, and that this village was part of a barony.

(It’s nice to live this peaceful family life. Hopefully, I can at least free everyone from being serfs, though I’m not really sure how to do that.)

Now that he had a younger brother, Allen thought about his family more. He now had goals other than just leveling up.
