Chapter 16 – The Knights ②

The knights ushered the villagers gathered in the square, to make enough space for Kurena to fight the knight lieutenant.

“Please, don’t do this!!!”

Gerda begged desperately, but the knights carried him to the edge of the square.

“He’s still saying that? It’s said that by age 10, Sword Saint Doberg had already slain a red dragon. And this girl is already five, isn’t she?”

The Knight Commander had seen his share of battles. Gerda was brought to the edge of the village square, and a knight stood next to him. Allen and Rodan rushed over to Gerda.

(Seriously? This is crazy.)

Allen didn’t know what to do. His level and summon skills weren’t enough, so there was nothing he could do against the knights. He was powerless.

Kurena and Lieutenant Knight Commander Wraybrand stood in the center of the square. Kurena was going to fight a lieutenant commander.

The two were holding swords. Kurena was just over 3 feet tall. In contrast, Wraybrand was twice her size, and fully armored. Kurena had only her normal clothes, which were no better than rags. The villagers all around them could see that it wouldn’t be much of a fight.

But Kurena didn’t look nervous at all. She held her sword up with a clear expression – like she was playing knights. And, as usual, she announced her name.

“I am Kurena the knight!! Prepare to fight!!”

It was a line that Allen had heard thousands of times. It was a line that marked the start of battle.

“…I am the knight, Wraybrand. Let us fight.”

Wraybrand mirrored the introduction.

There was no referee. It had already begun. Just like when she played with Allen, Kurena charged right in at Wraybrand. She held the steel sword effortlessly, even though it was much heavier than a wooden sword.

The swords collided. It was Kurena’s first time holding a real sword, but she wielded it without hesitation. She slashed again and again.

(Since my Swordsmanship is level three, Kurena’s is probably level five.)

Allen was the only one in the world in Hell Mode. Based on the stone throwing investigation, Kurena’s swordsmanship exp should be more than 100 + 100 + 1,000 + 10,000 + 100,000. If she’s growing 100 times faster than Allen, then that should be the equivalent of two skill levels.

Analysis aside, Allen thought that if he were hit by one of those sword attacks, he would die. The clanging of metal echoed through the square.

Most of the villagers thought that the battle would end quickly with Kurena’s death. But after 3 years of playing knights, she has grown enough to cross swords with a real knight.

The Knight Commander said nothing. His arms were crossed as he watched the fight with a wrinkled brow.

How long has it been? The swords have crossed dozens of times. What seemed to be an even match began to shift.

“Agh!!”

The fully armored Wraybrand brought his foot to Kurena’s belly. This fight wasn’t just about swords. Kurena was blown away by the perfectly-timed kick.

“KURENA!!”

Allen shouted. Kurena flew, crashing into the wall of a nearby building. The impact created a large concavity, cracking the wall.

The knights seized Allen and Gerda, who were trying to run towards Kurena. They were forced onto the ground.

(I knew there was no way. In the end, Kurena’s still just level 1. I don’t know how long this guy has been a knight, but it’s impossible to win against a knight with a higher level and skills. W-what do I do?)

Allen struggled, trying to shake off the knight holding him down.

“Wha!? Stay still!!”

“Le-Let GO of me you bastard!!”

The knight easily overpowered Allen, holding him in place. He tried to get up, but he couldn’t even move. He was trapped.

Instead of following up after his attack, Wraybrand just stood there. Kurena’s head was slumped, and she was completely silent. Everyone in the square was looking at her.

Allen kicked as hard as he could at an armored leg. The villagers wondered if Kurena was still alive.

The Knight Commander closed his eyes, and gave a deep sigh.

“So it was a lie, huh?”

Just when it looked like it was all over, something happened. Kurena stood up slowly, head still slumped forward. She raised her sword again. Even after being blown away, she had held onto it. Allen, who was still pinned to the ground, watched.

While Kurena stood up, Wraybrand kept his sword at the ready, waiting for her approach.

Kurena lifted her head, and slowly looked at Wraybrand. The villagers watched anxiously, wondering if the fight would continue. Then Kurena shouted.

“YAH!!!!!”

The wooden wall behind Kurena, which was already dented and cracked by the earlier collision, was further shattered by an invisible force.

Like a mirage, the image of Kurena wavered, like light was refracting through her.

(Eh?)

After her emphatic shout, Kurena charged at Wraybrand. She jumped, spun, and swung from above in a wide arc, as if adding centrifugal force to the attack. Kurena’s sword hit Wraybrand from above.

“Guh!”

A shock ran through Wraybrand, who had received the blow using both hands. The force of the impact caused his feet to sink into the dirt below him.

“HAA!!!!!!!”

Wraybrand also screamed, and the swords began to cross. Even in the daylight, the sparks flying were clearly visible.

However, it was obviously different than before. With every swing, Wraybrand’s sword was pushed back. He couldn’t withstand the force, and was moving backwards.

The impacts echoed throughout the village square. It wasn’t an equal fight. Even a layperson could see that Wraybrand was being pushed back. Kurena’s sword, which was as tall as she was, was being swung like a stick. She wielded it with an unusual power.

(What the? What’s going on? Maybe it’s a rare skill?)

Allen searched for a possible explanation. When reincarnating from the real world to this world, Allen had seen the description of Normal Mode. In Normal Mode, it said that you could get one rare skill through the gatcha. He thought that this might be the case for the people of this world.

(So Swordsmanship is just a normal skill that even I can get. Surely, Kurena was born with some other skill, a special skill suitable for a Sword Saint.)

The difference in power was so great that it might be possible. Looking at the situation, there was no way that Kurena was going to lose anymore. Allen noticed that the strength disappeared from the knights that were holding him and Gerda down. They were watching the fight, stunned.

“TAAA!!!!”

Kurena swung horizontally with a shout.

Clang!

“N-No way!”

Wraybrand’s sword snapped. Allen couldn’t help but shout when he saw that the sword was cut in half. The broken blade flew through the air and landed upright, sticking out of the ground. Wraybrand was still holding his broken sword, prepared for the follow-up attack.

“That’s enough!!!”

At that moment, the Knight Commander shouted loudly, signaling the end of the battle.

“Huhh? Are we done already?”

Kurena replied, unsatisfied.

“Yes, the battle is over. Sheath your swords!”

Kurena ran up to Wraybrand and bowed.

“Thank you very much! Uncle is strong!!”

When they played pretend knights, they always said “Thank you very much” at the end.

“I-I’m too young to be called uncle….”

Right as he said that, Wraybrand fell to his knees with a grimace.

“Take the Lieutenant Commander out of here!!”

In a hurry, the knight commander instructed the knights to support Wraybrand and carry him away. Based on how they supported him by the shoulders, it didn’t look like he could stand on his own.

As expected, it seemed that the knights found it unsightly to kneel on the ground in front of the villagers. Especially after losing to a five-year-old girl.

As Wraybrand passed by the knight commander, the commander patted his shoulder, probably congratulating him on a fight well fought.

Kurena went over to the Knight Commander with her sword. The knight commander was on alert.

“Thank you very much!”

Kurena returned the sword to the knight commander.

“!?”

The knight commander tried to hide his surprise. Looking at the sword, it was obvious that the steel blade was heavily damaged by the battle. What was even more surprising was the grip. It was like a child had grabbed a piece of clay. How strong was her grip? Looking at the tattered sword, Allen broke out in a cold sweat, even though it was the middle of the summer.

The knight commander kept holding the sword, which could no longer fit in a scabbard.

“Sh-She’s really a Sword Saint.”

“It’s for real! She beat a knight!!”

“I couldn’t even see the sword!”

After witnessing such a shocking scene, the villagers began to talk. There were already over 100, nearly 200 of them who had heard the commotion and came to watch the fight.

The battle, which had started out of nowhere, had ended in Kurena’s victory.

That’s a pretty great way to make a new sword saint hate the knights.
