Chapter 25 – First Fight

Every year, the Albaherons would fly north for the winter. Allen was born in this village 6 years ago, and he had never gone beyond its walls. The Albaheron had taught him the vastness of the world and the flow of the seasons.

Allen was named after the Albaheron, after his father’s wish that he could travel freely throughout the land.

“GYAAAAAASU!!!”

The Albaheron had come out of the sky and landed. It seemed that Bug G’s Taunt could provoke these monsters. Allen didn’t know what Albaheron were normally like, but this one seemed to be pretty angry.

Its wingspan was about 12 feet across, and it was more than 6 feet tall. It was more than double Allen’s height. Its feathers were mostly white, and they became increasingly blueish-black towards the tips of the wings.

The Albaheron landed in the center of the 30-foot flattened circle that Allen had made. Outside of the circle, still in the weeds, Allen crouched and hid.

(Wha!? I was just trying to catch a wild bird and an Albaheron came down!)

He was surprised, but didn’t have to think much about what to do. He could just hide and wait for it to leave.

But maybe… Maybe it was because he vaguely recalled Rodan saying that Albaheron meat was delicious. Or maybe it was his gamer instincts kicking in upon seeing a monster.

There was only one thing to do. He picked up a baseball-sized rock off the ground.

The Albaheron bit a second Bug G, which was still using Taunt. While the second Bug G disappeared, Allen threw the stone with all his strength.

With the combined force of his natural strength, the Beast cards, and Throwing level 3, he could throw something many times faster than an adult could. The stone headed for the Albaheron’s face like it was being vacuumed in.

WHAM!

“GUGYAAAAASU!?”

The stone smashed into its face, and crushed its right eye. The Albaheron squealed in pain from the unexpected attack and the loss of its eye.

Immediately, Allen picked up another stone and threw it at max power. This time, it struck the monster’s neck, and made it bend at an unnatural angle. Its head jerked violently.

Then, two more throws. The Albaheron’s legs lost their grip.

(It’s working pretty well! I got this! I’ve killed my first monster!!)

As Allen thought to himself that this battle was over, he grabbed his wooden sword and jumped out onto the trampled weeds. He closed the distance, and swung his sword up so fast it looked like it had a life of its own.

Allen put all his weight into the wooden sword. It bent the Albaheron’s neck. Allen pushed further. He wanted to pull the neck down to the ground.

But even though the Albaheron was damaged, it wasn’t quite dead yet. It swung its neck and threw Allen away. It was still alive and kicking.

“Wha!?”

Allen rolled over the weeds, with a squeal of surprise.

(Th-this is bad. Pochis! Cover me!!)

All at once, 15 Enhanced Beast F cards came out of the grimoire. The cards began to shine. In no time, there were 15 summoned creatures.

” ” “BARK!!” ” “

Beast F was about the size of an Akita dog(LINK TO AKITA DOG PHOTOS? WIKIPEDIA?) and was light brown. They surrounded the Albaheron, barking.

(Pochis, use Bite!!)

After receiving the command, the summons jumped on the monster’s legs, wings, and neck.

“GYAAAAAASU!!!”

The Albaheron shrieked loudly as the Enhanced Beast F dogs bit it all over. Even though it was taking damage, it didn’t seem like it would go down anytime soon. It used its reptilian feet to swat the dogs.

On the ground, the Albaheron couldn’t move that quickly, but it had a lot of power. It kicked a Beast F and sent it flying over the tallest weeds.

(Guh- At this rate, it’s not gonna die!)

One by one, the Pochis were bitten by a big beak, or swatted by a big claw. Everytime a summon turned to bubbles, Allen lost its buff. So, in a frenzy, Allen Created, Enhanced, and Summoned more Beast F cards. Each one took 20 MP. However, Allen only had 47 MP. After summoning two of them, he had run out.

(Guh- A D-rank monster is too much. There’s no way I can beat it at level 1!)

He was close to giving up.

The Albaheron attacked Allen with it’s huge feet. He automatically defended with the wooden sword, but he couldn’t stop the hit entirely. He was blown backwards.

It didn’t stop there. As Allen was sent rolling over the weeds, he was struck again by a large claw. The foot pinned him down. Then, the Albaheron pecked Allen in the face. In a panic, he moved his wooden sword to stop it from biting him.

(Guh- This is bad. I-I’m going to die.)

He had never felt this close to death. The Enhanced Beast F’s were biting it all over, but the Albaheron was focused on Allen. It was stronger than him. Vividly, Allen could see each of the jagged teeth in its beak, the undulating back of its throat.

The Albaheron pecked his cheek, cutting his face. It bled. The wooden sword that he had so desperately been holding with both of his hands began to bend, close to breaking.

While pressed to the ground, he thought desperately, looking for a way to break out.

(I’ve got to do something! Think! THINK!!)

He had never been more grateful for the thousands of hours of games he had played in his previous life. All those games, those countless hours, had given him something: experience. Thanks to his vast experience, when he saw the name of a skill, technique, or magic ability, he could usually predict what it would do.

This was no time to reminisce. In a desperate voice, Allen screamed.

“CHU!! COME OUT!!!”

While still pinned to the ground, Allen summoned an Enhanced Bug F. It was a leech – a large, sea-cucumber-like leech.

“CHUU!! USE SUCK!!!”

“Chuu!!!”

With a squeal, Bug F contracted its muscles, going from a sea cucumber shape to a volleyball shape. Then, it jumped onto the neck of the Albaheron that was about to eat Allen.

“GYAAAAASU!!”

It attached itself to the Albaheron’s neck. The Albaheron tried to shake it off, but the leech’s suction power kept it from getting flung. In that momentary gap, Allen escaped the Albaheron’s foot.

The Bug F held fast, and began to glow blue.

(Ohhh! It’s sucking something. It was a draining skill after all.)

Allen’s prediction was on the money. He was right about Bug F’s Suck ability, as well as Pochi’s Bite ability.

He didn’t know what was being sucked, maybe its attack or HP. Regardless, he summoned another Bug F. The second leech stuck to the Albaheron’s thigh and started blinking blue.

Before the Albaheron could shake off the leeches, Allen attacked, and Beast F assisted him with Bite. The offensive had resumed.

A claw hit Allen in the head. He used his sword to block the attack. It didn’t feel as powerful as before.

(Oh, so it lowers ATK? Now I take it down.)

Because of the two Bug F’s using Suck, the Albaheron’s ATK had dropped. Allen pushed the Albaheron with his whole body, knocking it backwards on the ground.

From there, he pressed his sword on its neck, pressing all his weight on it, trying to suffocate it. A few minutes passed.

The grimoire appeared. It glowed faintly.

(Oh, there’s a log.)

『You have defeated 1 Albaheron. You have gained 100 EXP.』

In silver letters, the log displayed his successful subjugation and the EXP he had gained.

“Ohhh! I won! I won!!!”

Lying on the ground in front of him, was the Albaheron.

This was the first time he had defeated a monster. It reminded him of a time, decades ago, when he was a 7 or 8 year old Kenichi. This moment felt like that memory.

(So that’s what it’s like killing a monster for the first time. When the main character of a game reaches 16 or 17 years old, they’re given some coins and told to leave the town to fight demons. I finally understand what that feels like. Except I haven’t left the village yet.)

It brought back memories of the games back in the real world, where you would use your coins to buy a stick or something like that, and diligently train around the village to level up. And when you ran out of HP, you’d go back to the village to heal.

(But then again, D-rank monsters are pretty strong. I’d have to kill 10 of them to gain enough EXP to level up. Well, I’m still only level 1, and my summons are still rank F.)

【EXP】 100 / 1,000

While checking the EXP he gained from the battle, and analyzing the fight, Allen returned all the summons to card form, and returned the stones to the basket.

He held the basket in one hand, slid the wooden sword into his belt, and picked up the Albaheron. He wanted to take it home without damaging it, but the legs and the wings dragged against the ground. Allen wasn’t tall enough.

Carrying the Albaheron on his back, he headed home.

When he got to the front door, he saw a girl standing in the yard. It was Kurena.

(Hah? I thought I told her we weren’t playing today.)

“A-Allen! What happened!?”

She was surprised by Allen’s appearance. He had scratches on his face, and was bleeding all over. He probably got a lot of the cuts from tumbling around in the weeds. Kurena rushed into the house to report what she’d seen to Rodan and Theresia.

“Wait a mi- Huh? A-Allen!!”

Theresia hugged him and checked him all over to make sure he wasn’t seriously hurt.

“I’m fine, Mom. I caught an Albaheron.”

Allen reported that he was safe, and that he had subjugated an Albaheron. He showed her the Albaheron on his back.

Thus ended the battle with the Albaheron, Allen’s first battle as a summoner.

Fool should have brought his dad’s spear. He should have been hit by a wooden sword enough to know it wouldn’t hurt a monster but to be fair he wasn’t planning on such a big catch. He may have trained swords with the girl but he should have been practicing with the spear as well. Swords are really side arms anyways.
