Chapter 4 – Summoning

Allen decided to try summoning for the first time.

(Alright, umm, I can summon a bug or a beast, right?)

On page 2 of the grimoire, bugs and beasts were listed as possible summons.

(Since I’m inside, let’s summon a bug.)

He had no idea what he would summon. He expected a low-tier monster or something.

However, it’d be a pain if he chose BEAST H and summoned a big wolf or a bear. The summoner class was supposed to be better than a Demon King, so it made sense to be careful.

He reincarnated into this world a year ago. Memories of the past year flashed before his eyes. Memories of breastfeeding from a beautiful mother who was less than 20 years old. Memories of having his body wiped down by a beautiful mother. Memories of having his diapers changed by a beautiful mother.

(Wait, wait, I’m getting distracted. Okay, let’s try summoning! Summon bug!)

Allen raised his hand in the air and tried to summon a bug the same way he moved the book.

But nothing happened. The nursery was silent.

(Wha? Nothing’s happening…. Maybe it’s on the floor?)

Since nothing had changed, he got up and looked around the room. His family had already eaten dinner, and serfs had an early night. Darkness was fast filling the room.

He wanted to figure out summoning before it was dark.

(Hmm? Did I say it wrong? KUCHIYOSE NO JUTSU!)

Nothing came out. He tried changing the words a few times.

“Ai chooze yuu, Bug!”

He decided it wasn’t enough to just say it in his head, and tried speaking out loud in his baby speak.

But nothing happened.

(Uh oh. What am I supposed to do?)

He took another look at the grimoire. Nowadays, if you went to any walkthrough website, you could find detailed instructions on every game. If you went to a forum, you’d find a thread answering any question you might have had. Basically, there was never a problem when you didn’t understand something.

(Does this mean that I can only summon something after I’ve created it?)

He had a hypothesis. Since there was Summon, Create, and Delete, he figured that he could at least Create.

(Create bug!)

“Heh?”

The grimoire shined faintly. It wasn’t the pages that shined, but the cover. The glowing cover stood out in the otherwise dark room.

(Oh? There’s some text!)

『What rank of bug would you like to create?』

The cover of the grimoire displayed the question in silver letters.

(What rank? I can only do H rank, right? Create H rank!)

In front of him, there was a light. The light subsided and there was something like a card.

(Oohh!! A card!! With a picture of a bug on it!! A grasshopper, huh?)

『Created one rank H bug.』

The card was around a quarter of the size of the grimoire. It had a beautiful picture of a grasshopper, and『BUG H』was written in the top left corner.

(A grasshopper, huh? Doesn’t look very strong. It’s a summoned beast, but it’s just an insect. Oh, and my MP went down from 2 to 0.)

He had spent the past year imagining himself summoning sea serpents from Greek mythology, or the gods of life and death. But all he made was a single card with a grasshopper on it. And it took all his MP.

(Well, there’s no point in dwelling on it. I see, so the indentations on the later pages of the grimoire were for holding cards. So the summons are turned into cards and stored in the grimoire.)

Now that he had the card, he had a general idea of how to summon it.

(Let’s do it tomorrow. It’s already dark.)

The room that was once dim was now pitch black. Since there weren’t any lights, he had no choice but to put the BUG H card in the holder in the grimoire. He would continue with the summoning tomorrow.

“Good morning, Allen.”

A bright light flooded the room. It seemed that Theresia had opened all the wooden windows in the room.

“Good morning, Mama.”

The sun was already high in the sky.

(It seems that this world is also on a 24-hour clock. So it’s around 8 right now.)

Allen’s parents, like him, were serfs since birth. They didn’t know things like units and measurements, probably because they weren’t educated. As a one year old, it was still too early for him to ask them, but if all he did was listen to them talk, they’d never bring it up. He had recently learned about the time, but still didn’t know how to measure money, weight, or distance.

Allen thought that, although it was common in isekais, he wouldn’t be able to cheat knowledge from a young age by reading a bunch of books from a nobleman’s personal library.

A serf’s morning started early. Allen had never seen his father in the morning, so he was probably gone by around 6. Theresia, while talking to Rodan, had said that Allen was getting older, so she wanted to start helping out in the fields again.

(As I thought, it’s a bad idea to summon while my mom is in this tiny house with me. When I’m awake, she comes to check on me periodically. Maybe I should wait until it’s nap time.)

Allen hadn’t told his parents that he was a summoner reincarnated from another world. He’s pretending to be a baby who speaks well. He probably won’t ever have to tell them.

If he tried to, they might think he’s possessed or something.

While waiting for his chance to try out summoning, he twirled the grimoire around.

Theresia, who finished all the housework in a flurry, was currently breastfeeding Allen. At first, he was quite embarrassed, but he eventually got used to it. Now, he was free from sexual desire, with the tranquility of a hermit sage.

“Good night, Allen”

“Good night, Mama.”

(It’s time! Nap time is here!)

She carried Allen to the nursery, where she put him in the wooden crib. She closed the windows, and Allen was left alone in the dimly lit room.

(Alright, it’s time. Hehehe, let’s pick up where we left off.)

He pulled out the grimoire, letting it float in the air. He pulled out the BUG H card from the holder inside.

(For now, let’s just see if I can summon it without saying anything out loud. Summon Bug H!!!)

He stretched both of his arms out in front of him, putting his whole being into the summoning. Then, light leaked out from the card. There was a faint glow, and the card disintegrated, leaving a grasshopper in its wake.

“Oohhhh! A grasshopper!!”

He shouted involuntarily. His eyes were glued to the grasshopper that dropped gracefully onto the floor next to the crib.

(Hmmm, it’s pretty big, about half a foot long. It looks like a locust that you’d find in Africa, or Southeast Asia. Well, a grasshopper is a grasshopper.)

He watched the grasshopper. It hopped around aimlessly. Their eyes never met.

(Since it’s one of my summons, can it hear what I’m thinking? Come here. Come over here.)

The grasshopper made eye contact with Allen.

(Oh, did he hear me? Not bad, little guy.)

He tried to guide it by waving his hands.

But the grasshopper just looked away and started hopping around randomly again.

(…. Useless. It’s just a grasshopper. Can’t hear my thoughts, can’t follow directions, nothing. Is there anything in the grimoire? Hmm… More pages?)

Since he summoned something for the first time, he checked the grimoire. The third page, which didn’t exist before, was now open.

(I see, if there’s new information, the grimoire will add a new page. Hmmm, this is the grasshopper’s status.)

The third page of the grimoire displayed the grasshopper’s status.

【 TYP 】 BUG
【 RNK 】 H
【 NAM 】 N/A (Please name it.)
【 H P 】 3
【 M P 】 0
【 ATK 】 2
【 DEF 】 5
【 AGL 】 5
【 INT 】 1
【 LCK 】 2
【 BUF 】 DEF 1, AGL 1
【 SKL 】 Hop

(Ho, it’s pretty weak, but compared to me as a baby, it’s not bad. It has more ATK than me? And what is BUF? Maybe it’s a buff? Huh?! My stats increased!!!)

“Amashing!”

Allen had one more defense and agility than yesterday. It was displayed with a plus sign.

When he saw that his summon had increased his stats, he couldn’t help but pump his fist and yell.

“C’mon, Allen. You have to sleep properly.”

Theresia, who was in the yard, returns after hearing Allen’s voice.

(Hah?! Oh no, she came into the room. It’s probably not a good idea to dismiss the grasshopper right now.)

“Sowwy Mama.”

“Mmm, that’s okay. Huh?”

The grasshopper and Theresia looked right at each other.

“IYAAAAAAA! A BUGGGG!!!!!”

Theresia attacked the grasshopper with her foot.

(Ah! She’s stepping on my summon!! I-it’s disappearing….)

The grasshopper evaporated into glowing bubbles. Theresia kept searching for the grasshopper, thinking that it had escaped. Allen was shocked, but he couldn’t show it. He kept a straight face and laid back down. Thus began Allen’s life as a summoner.
