Chapter 7 – Level Up

It has been a year and ten months since Allen was reincarnated into a different world. In two months he would turn 2 years old.

He had been blessed with good parents. He was kept healthy and safe, and had just weaned.

His parents were serfs, so he was a serf. Based on what he knew from the real world, there were two main elements to being a serf.

・You do not get to choose your job.

・You cannot own land.

He had various theories, but these were the two main points. In the real world, this was the dominant system until the 19th century. Some countries still used this system.

In the past ten months, he learned that the calendar in this world had 12 months per year, 30 days per month, and 6 days per week. Little by little he was learning about this world.

Also, there were four seasons, and the climate changed in the spring, summer, autumn and winter. It snowed quite a bit in the winter, and during his second winter, the house was quite cold because it was basically just a shack.

He took a moment, reminiscing about the past ten months.

Right now, the cover of the grimoire was active. The cover is usually completely black, but whenever Allen summoned something or if there was a change in status, a message kind of like a game log showed up.

Normally, the log was silver, but this time it was yellow. Allen had no doubt that yellow would become one of his favorite colors.

『The Create skill is now at 1000 / 1000 EXP. Create is now level 2. Summon is now level 2. You have gained the Synthesis skill. You have gained the Expansion skill. Note taking functionality has been added to the grimoire.』

“WHOOOOOOAAAAAA!!!!!!”

For a gamer, this is the moment that made all the trials and tribulations worth it. The bad food and the cold didn’t matter anymore. Because it was the middle of the summer, Theresia was working the fields with Rodan, so he could shout out in joy, unrestrained.

(Oh man, there’s so many interesting things to check out. But first, what’s my status?)

The log displayed on the cover of the grimoire was filled with many new words, but first, he checked his status.

【 NAM 】 Allen

(What… What are these dashes?)

He was so overwhelmed with all the new things that he froze, clutching the floating grimoire in his tiny hands. Fifteen minutes passed.

(O-okay. Calm down. It seems like Create and Summon each went up a level. So now I can create G-rank summons? Maybe it’s a system where, the higher the rank, the more types of summon there are?)

He guessed that there were more obtainable summons because Create and Summon leveled up.

(For now, I want to try creating the new summons, but I don’t have any MP… So, what else can I do?)

He looked at his status page, at the word “Synthesize”. Based on the word, he thought he might be able to fuse summons together. Since the summons were stored as cards, he could probably combine the cards.

Since it looked like G-rank Create and Synthesize will both cost MP, he decided to investigate something else. He had no MP because he had just spent it all to level up.

(But dang, 10 thousand? Why does it cost 10 times as much EXP to level Create again?)

At the current pace, where he used Create 3 times a day, it would take 4 and a half years. Well, things took time, no way around it. Allen was still level 1, so there was probably a way to increase max MP.

(Next is the Expansion skill! Oh! The slots in the grimoire have doubled to 20! So now I can summon up to 20 creatures!!!! Uhyooo!!)

If the number of slots went from 10 to 20, he could store twice as many summons. Since the buffs from the cards stacked, he basically doubled his buffs.

(So… what about the note-taking functionality? Oh, there’s about 10 pages labeled “Notes”! Oh, and it records notes when I think it! Woohoo!!)

As the name implies, the last 10 pages of the grimoire could now be used to take notes. The grimoire was as big as an encyclopedia, so there was enough room for everything. And it could read his thoughts, and would write them down for him. It was a pretty useful feature.

(Well, I have 0 MP right now, so why don’t I take a nap and continue the investigation at night?)

With the comfort of knowing that leveling up brought huge benefits, the one-year-old Allen returned to his nap, full of joy.

Rodan and Theresia arrived home. They placed their farming tools in the entryway, and they washed themselves and quenched their thirst with water from the water jug. Every morning, Rodan filled the water jug with water. This water was safe to drink and wash with.

“Allen, have you been a good boy? Dinner will be ready soon.”

“Yes, Mama.”

Theresia has been using much less baby talk. She had stopped lactating, and it was time for her child to grow more independant. Their family didn’t own many seasonings, and they could only bake or boil their food, so dinner would be done soon. It was Rodan’s job to mash the vegetables, beans, and potatoes for Allen.

The meal began without a prayer. This was pretty common, because they were in a frontier village.

“Oh, by the way, our next-door neighbor, Gerda, says that Kurena is kind of a handful ‘cause she’s such a tomboy. They want you to play with her.”

“Eh?”

(Oh right, we had a neighbor. I haven’t seen them since the dismantling of the Great Boar.)

He recalled the pink-haired toddler who was being carried by their neighbor Gerda.

The village was rather large because there were a lot of fields. The neighbor in question was less than 2 years old, and she had to stay indoors, which was in line with Theresia’s advice that kids shouldn’t leave the house alone. So, even though they were neighbors, they haven’t seen each other much.

“Y’know, she might be your wife one day, so you should get along with her.”

Theresia, who was about to turn 20, seemed to like stories like that. She joined in the conversation with a “well, well, well~.” It was a small world, their parents knew each other, and they were similar in age. It was normal for serfs in a situation like Allen and Kurena’s to get married. If they couldn’t leave the village, then there was really no other option.

“Eh? So can I leave the house?”

“Well…. maybe when you’re 3 years old.”

Even though he just wanted to go next door, he was still grounded until he was 3.

After family time was over, he returned to the nursery.

(Hehehe, my MP is restored, so now is the time. G-rank Create or Synthesize, which one should I start with? For now, let’s try out the new skill, Synthesize.)

The grimoire appeared. Because he was thinking about Synthesize, the pages flipped automatically.

(Oh! The grimoire has a new page! There are two slots in the middle of the page, and the page next to it has one slot. So this turns two summons into one. I don’t know the conditions for synthesis, so, for now, I’ll try synthesizing 2 H-rank Beasts.)

He inserted two Beast H’s into the slots.

(Alright, Synthesize!)

But nothing happened.

(Eh? Did I do something wrong?)

He checked the log on the cover of the grimoire. Looking at it was usually quite helpful. There was a message there.

『Insufficient MP for Synthesize level 1.』

“Bah! Insufficient!!!”

Oops. He closed his mouth after shouting. Apparently, his max MP of 2 wasn’t enough.

(Eh? Am I stuck? My max MP is too low for Synthesize, so what about Create G?)

He decided that he didn’t have enough MP to Synthesize.

Next, he decided to try Create G. He didn’t know what the 『 - 』 was, so he decided to try making a Beast first.

(Create Beast G!)

But nothing happened. He figured this might be the case, so he checked the cover of the grimoire.

『Insufficient MP for Create Beast G』

(S-so that’s how it is… I can’t Create Beast G or Synthesize with my current MP? My max MP is too low?)

Allen was at a loss. Apparently, there was a lot he couldn’t do without first leveling up.
