Chapter 27 – Level Up ②

Allen, alone in the center of the fallow field, had an Albaheron pinned to the ground.

“Oh man, I didn’t expect two of them. I thought I was going to die. Well, none of my summons were destroyed, so it was a perfect game.”

He couldn’t help but talk to himself.

He had gone with Gerda to the mayor’s place to figure out the details about how he’d be taxed for the Albaheron. After that, he continued hunting them, once every three days. It turned out that if he Taunted with 3 Bug G’s while an Albaheron was overhead, it would come diving down in a rage.

If he used only one or two Bug G’s, it wouldn’t work. And Albaheron wouldn’t come unless they were flying overhead. Also, it seemed like Taunt only worked on monsters. So far, none of the birds that looked like red-crowned cranes had come down.

・Wait for an Albaheron to appear in the sky
 ・Use Taunt with 3 Bug G's
・When it comes down, turn the Bug G's into cards before they are killed
 ・Use Suck with 2 Bug F's
・While it’s weakened, throw a rock and surround it with 16 Beast F's
・Hold its neck down with the wooden sword until it stops moving.

Although he had struggled during the first battle, he was able to figure out the special strengths of his summons and managed to finish the second battle without a scratch. He had found a winning strategy.

When he tried to catch them today, two came down at the same time. Come to think of it, he had been told that Albaheron could fly alone, or in flocks.

(Maybe I should make some more Bug F’s aka Chuus. Just in case.)

The grimoire glowed faintly. Allen was holding the Albaheron down with his sword. It had stopped moving.

“Yay! I leveled up!!”

He spoke to himself again, even louder than before. The kill log appeared on the grimoire in a silver font, followed by a block of yellow text.

『You have defeated 1 Albaheron. You have gained 100 EXP.』

『You have reached 1,000 / 1,000 EXP. You are now Level 2. Your HP has increased by 25. Your MP has increased by 40. Your ATK has increased by 14. Your DEF has increased by 14. Your AGL has increased by 26. Your INT has increased by 40. Your LCK has increased by 26.』

(Oh man. My stats grew so much. This class’s stats really are on par with a Sword Saint. That said, there’s a big difference between an S-tier stat and a C-tier stat.)

Allen checked his status.

(I see, when you level up, your HP and MP get fully restored.)

When he leveled up his summoning skills, his MP would always be low, so it was refreshing to see his MP maxed out.

(The stat increases were added to the numbers in the parentheses, and multiplied by 0.6, so I didn’t get the full effect. This system is ruthless.)

He checked the grimoire to see how his stats grew.

(After 6 years, I’ve finally leveled up for the first time… In this world, leveling up is called overcoming the Trials of God or something, right?)

He thought about what a high level looked like. Rodan was much stronger than an average person. The buckets he used to carry water were huge. He had probably hunted dozens of Great Boars, raising his level a good deal.

Once, Allen had asked Rodan how to become as strong as him, and his dad said that God gave people trials, and if you overcame those trials, God would grant you strength. This is how the people of this world understood leveling up.

(Oh no, she’s going to be here soon. I have to hurry back.)

In a hurry, Allen stacked the two Albaherons. Carrying both of them, he headed home. He didn’t have a lot of time.

“I’m home!”

“!? Welcome home.”

Theresia responded, hiding her surprise. Today, Allen had caught yet another Albaheron. And there were two of them.

“Did you catch that today?”

Rodan, who was in the entryway, called out.

“Yeah, Dad… Are you sure you’re okay enough to be doing that?”

Rodan’s condition had improved considerably in the past month. He could now sit and stand, but if he stood for too long, or moved around too much, his torso would hurt. He was currently sitting and beating some wheat straw with a stick, to soften it. It would be used to weave sandals or winter shoes.

Allen was concerned because Rodan was using a rather large club.

“Ah, I can’t just let you do everything…….”

Rodan stopped when he saw Allen’s face. He seemed to have noticed something.

“Eh? Dad?”

“No, it’s nothing. Must be my imagination.”

(Oh? What the heck?)

Then it came.

“Ah! Uh oh, I gotta drain these before Kurena comes.”

Allen headed for the small irrigation canal outside, carrying the Albaheron. He had set up something like a clothesline here, for draining the Albaheron.

It was a bit over 6 feet tall. It was a simple thing, made of firewood and other sticks and boards that were lying around the house. He hung the Albaheron upside down, and cut its neck to drain its blood. Blood flowed down the canal.

“Alleeeeeen!!”

Kurena came running at a brisk pace, wooden sword in hand.

“Hey Kurena. Just a minute, I’m almost done here.”

He played with Kurena everyday, usually from 1pm to 4pm. But every third day, he told her to come at the 3pm bell because of his hunting. By that time, he would usually have defeated his prey and hung it over the canal.

As Allen worked on the two Albaherons, Kurena came over to him.

“Amazing Allen! You caught two today!!”

Kurena’s eyes glittered. She wasn’t afraid of the monsters at all. Allen finished his work quickly, while thinking that Kurena could learn a thing or two from the scaredy-cat Mash.

After playing for an hour or so, Kurena went home. Mash was watching from the house, through the window. Starting next spring, after he turned three, Mash could start coming outside.

(For now, I’ve reached my quota of 10.)

After dismantling one Albaheron, there was about as much meat as the reward from one Great Boar hunt. 10 of them was enough to last the winter. He still had to dry some of the meat, and trade some for firewood.

(The Albaherons stop flying next month, so I’ll have to hunt as many as possible before then. It’ll take 20 of them to reach the next level… It’ll be hard to reach level 3 this year.)

“An opening.”

Because he was thinking in the middle of playing knights, he got a whack in the head.

“Owww.”

“Jeez! Pay attention!”

Kurena puffed her cheeks because Allen wasn’t taking their game seriously. Allen apologized while rubbing the back of his head.

His base stats should be higher after the lvl up. In chap 19 his stats were – Hp 20, Mp 0 since he used it all, Atk 5, Def 5, Agl 12, Int 15, Luc 12. So the new stats should be around HP 46, MP Unknown, ATK 19, DEF 19, AGL 38, INT 55, LUC 38.
