Chapter 28 – Confession

It was a bit after 4, Allen had just finished playing knights with Kurena. The sun was about to set, so Kurena started running home.

Allen helped Theresia prepare dinner, because she was pregnant. By the time supper was ready, the blood had finished draining from the Albaherons, so he moved them to the entryway. It turned out it was better to store them indoors overnight.

The serfs in the area all knew that Allen would hang Albaherons outside his house, since he’s already done it 10 times. At the well, some people even asked him for advice on how to hunt them, but he didn’t tell them much, other than saying that you had to hunt them after they landed.

He hunted in the fallow field, covered by tall grass, to hide how he hunted. Because it was filled with dead weeds, anybody would naturally create a lot of rustling. If someone was nearby, he would stop hunting, but it hadn’t happened yet.

“So with this, that’s 10 Albaherons?”

“Yeah, Dad.”

As they sat around the hearth eating dinner, Rodin spoke to Allen.

“That’s really something.”

Rodan seemed concerned. Allen was extraordinarily strong. He could fetch water and do farmwork no problem. It only took 2 days for him to clear out all the potatoes from their relatively large field. And, he hunted Albaherons like it was nothing special. Rodan always knew he was a clever boy, but recently, he had shown a lot more different strengths.

Allen looked at Theresia. She looked uneasy, but she didn’t say anything. He looked back at Rodan.

“Once Mash goes to bed, can I speak with the two of you?”

While watching Mash sitting next to him, eating enthusiastically, Allen asked them a question.

“Alright.”

Just from Allen’s tone, Rodan seemed to already understand. Allen thought it was about time. He was going to tell them why he was so powerful.

Nowadays, his parents were usually home, so Mash didn’t get upset when Allen was out. After they played for a bit, Mash fell asleep quickly.

After he confirmed that Mash was asleep, Allen returned to the living room. Rodan and Theresia were both sitting there. It seemed like they had been waiting for a while. Allen sat in his usual spot.

“No matter what you have to tell us, you’ll always be our little Allen.”

Before Allen could start, Theresia told him that her feelings towards him would never change.

“Thank you. It’s kind of a long story, if that’s okay.”

“Yeah.”

Rodan replied.

“When I was one year old, I received a sign.”

” “A sign?” “

“Yeah, a message from God.”

” “!?” “

“It said that God would give me wisdom and power.”

” “Power?” “

“Yeah. It seems like it made me smarter and stronger than other people.”

“Hmm.”

“And it also said that I’d receive trials that would be harder than 100 people’s combined. It told me to overcome the trials with the wisdom and power that I got.”

” “A hundred people!?” “

Each of his trials was the equivalent of 100 trials. It was an endless ordeal.

Rodan referred to leveling up as “overcoming trials”, so Allen adapted his story to match.

“No way…… God gave you trials that even 100 people couldn’t do….”

Theresia exclaimed.

“I see. I guess that means you overcame one of those trials today.”

“Eh?”

Surprisingly, Rodan seemed to have figured out where Allen was going with his story. He touched Allen’s cheek.

“You probably didn’t notice, but up till lunch, you had a scar right here.”

There was a scar on his cheek from the first time he fought an Albaheron. He was cut by the tip of its beak, back when it almost ate him. Now, it was gone. Allen hadn’t noticed.

(Eh? I knew that when you leveled up, your HP would get fully recovered, but it also heals your old wounds and stuff?)

This was new to Allen. That’s why, when Rodan got seriously injured, the rest of the serfs tried their best to take down the Great Boar. If they defeated it, there was a chance that Rodan would overcome a trial and get completely cured.

“I think it’s the first time I’ve passed a trial, cuz I feel like I got stronger.”

“I see. So, the announcement from god, did they give you their name?”

There were many gods in this world, and he was asking which one had given Allen the trials.

“Eh? Uh, it said it was from Elmere.”

“T-the God of Creation, huh? You shouldn’t refer to them so casually, be more respectful.”

“I understand. I’ll make sure to do that in public.”

“Ah, r-right….”

He didn’t have a shred of faith.

“So what about the appraisal ceremony?”

During the appraisal ceremony, Allen’s stats were all ranked E and he didn’t have a talent. Rodan had been wondering about that for a long time. He thought that, even though Allen didn’t have a talent, he was capable, and a good son.

“About that… There was another sign from Elmere, 2 months ago.”

“S-so recently!?”

“It said that there wasn’t a mistake about my stats, because the appraisal was based on both the stat’s growth speed, and the speed you’re expected to overcome the trials. And for the talent, it said that it couldn’t be appraised because it was a new talent. It didn’t say anything about the actual talent though.”

“R-really?”

Allen thought about hiding the fact that he was a Summoner. He could summon creatures from thin air, and that might cause some sort of misunderstanding, especially because it would be the first time Rodan and Theresia had ever heard of this talent.

He was planning to wait a bit longer, and would take his time telling them.

For now, he would leave it at just that. Allen had explained how his trials were as hard as that of one hundred people, and that he’d been given wisdom and power to overcome those trials. His goal was to explain his wisdom and power.

Of course, he left out the reincarnation. Since the very beginning, he had decided to hide his memories of his previous life. If black eyes and black hair are proof of reincarnation, then the fact that the villagers were so surprised probably meant that other reincated people were quite rare, or nonexistent. He thought that it might be just because he was in a small village, but the knight commander had also looked at him funny. Apparently, black eyes and hair were pretty dang rare.

Theresia hugged Allen.

Now, she finally understood why he was throwing rocks at the tree until the bark peeled off, and why he was fighting Albaherons for the family. She thought about him challenging the trials of God all by himself.

“I… I just wish you had told us earlier.”

“Yeah, it would have been good to know all this earlier. I am your father, after all. Well…. So you were so smart because God gave you wisdom?”

“Sorry I didn’t tell you earlier, Mom, Dad. I’ve just been thinking about how to overcome the Trials.”

Theresia made a face that said “From now on, tell us. Okay!?” Her cute little child was sentenced to a life of suffering. He had to go through trials that even 100 people couldn’t handle.

“……I see. Right, it’s a test that the great God of Creation has given you. And they wouldn’t give you something impossible. So, if you ever have any problems, you can rely on your mom and dad.”

Rodan seemed to approve. Because he had been involved with Boar hunting his whole life, he was more familiar with trials of god than Theresia.

“Thank you.”

“Have you told anyone else?”

“No, I haven’t even told Kurena.”

“I see. Well, the Great Creator is absolute. Don’t say too much.”

Some people wouldn’t take it well if they heard that only Allen had heard the voice of God.

(Well, they heard me out because they’re my parents. But if I told someone else, they might ask for proof, and say that I was blasphemous.)

“Yeah.”

“Except….”

“Eh?”

“Can I brag a bit to Gerda?”

“…….”

“I can’t?”

“No, it’s fine.”

“Cool, cool. He’s so happy about all that sword saint whatever. I have to make sure he understands that my kid is cooler.”

It seemed like Rodan was a bit jealous because his friend’s kid was so amazing.

Although not much had been said, the awkwardness of the past few days had disappeared.
